A thai recipe...

I dont share recipes on here often. Lately, this is because I don't have a kitchen, so I don't cook!
So, I thought I would share a new one from this week.
Dont worry, its a really simple one, using only 3 ingredients!

What you need:
1 tbsp salt
3 tbsp oil
50-100 live bugs

Oh. Did I forget to mention that there are bugs involved?
Yes, there are. So if you are not a fan (AMANDA!) you might wanna skip this post!

Step 1:
Get the kids to run around with bowls, collecting tree beetles. Any size will do, although the big ones are always fought over, so try to get lots of those.

Step 2:
Store bugs overnight (if you collect them the night before) then put into a metal bowl. Rinse with water 2-3 times. This depends on how much the beetles have gotten...dirty.. since you put them in there. Since they are afraid, they tend to soil themselves a lot.

Step 3:
Sprinkle 1-2 tbsp of salt and toss (reminiscent of tossing a salad) to coat.

Step 4: Heat 3 tbsp oil in a large skillet. When oil is hot, add bugs to skillet.
Remember, the bugs are still alive when you put them in the oil, but they don't stay that way for long.

(Fresh as you can get!)

Continue stirring. The air will fill with an interesting odor, one that I just cannot describe. Certainly not a pleasant one and very distinct.
Fry for 5-8 minutes, until they are crispy and cooked through and voila!
Your bugs are done!

Make sure to give one to Sweet P to try, bugs are one of his favourite snacks!

So there you have it! Fresh toasted beetles in 4 easy steps with only 3 ingredients!
Andrew and I both tried them, for some unknown reason.
While they arent delicious (and I certainly wont be duplicating this recipe in Canada!) they werent too bad. Kind of spongy. No they do not taste like chicken.
They taste like they smell, which isn't grand.

Now go on, enjoy your dinner and think of us, over here in Thailand!

  1. How adventurous of you! My mom and I couldn't get ourselves to try any bugs in China. We did try something unknown that we thought was chicken, but was definitely not...we determined it may have been snake because it was so rubbery. I think food is one of the things that makes traveling so great and makes great memories (good and bad)!
But I still have to say...YUCK!

  2. As much as I usually look to you for cooking advice and recipes, I will not be able to do this one justice, so I will save it for the Thais.
